British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over the festive period. This action, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
